Ever since this Reagan revolution the Republican Party has based their governing philosophy on cutting taxes. It is no coincidence that the National Debt has been increasing ever since. The wealthy enjoy most of the benefits of American society, yet they are unwilling to help pay for its costs.
Now President Trump has decided to use tariffs to continue this transfer of wealth from the poor to the rich. Tariffs raise the costs of everything and that cost does not fall on the Foreign countries who are exporting those goods, it falls on the American consumer. Of course it reduces the amount of foreign goods coming into the American market because as the tariffs increase the price of these goods, demand decreases because people cannot afford them anymore.
The rich are constantly finding ways around such restrictions. Private Yachts are exempt and politicians are quick to carve out exemptions that favor their wealthy supporters. We are in a cycle where wealthy people only want more wealth and they are willing to fund politicians (in both parties) who are willing to give them what they want. As the deficit balloons, they spend millions to fund po;itical campaigns but are unwilling to pay for the common good that is the American way of life.
Our politicians know how to milk the system. They accept money and gifts in exchange for laws favoring businesses and the rich at the expense of the general public, then use insider information to purchase stocks in the companies they are benefitting. This corporate largesse continues after they leave the government as they are rewarded with high paying positions in the companies they were supposed to be regulating for the public good. All politicians are guilty of these practices to some extent. And the grifting and gift giving extend into all three branches of the government.
