Our hypocritical campaign finance laws invite 'pay-to-play'. If I invite a legislator to lunch and slip him $100 under the table to vote for or against a particular bill, we could both go to prison. If instead I make the same request and hand him a $10,000 check as a donation to his reelection it is perfectly legal. We've further corrupted campaign financing by 1) declaring corporations are 'persons' with free speech rights and therefore a right to donate to elections and 2) to allow unlimited undisclosed donations. To run for office requires money and today lots of it. Who has piles of money to give? Wealthy people and businesses. Thus those with money can legally and secretly give to those who will do their bidding. The end result is that virtually every elected official is beholden to those who funded their election. We need full and timely disclosure of all donations, we need dollar limits to level playing field and better yet public financing of elections.
NY State took a direct approach through public campaign financing under which candidates for state elective offices may apply for significant funds for their campaigns if they in return pledge to forego all private financing of their campigns. Now that is a beautiful Bill.
Don’t be fooled by End Citizens United (ECU), American Promise, Wolf-Pack aka Wolf-PAC.
They all support the Democracy for All Amendment. (H.J.Res.1 / S.J.Res.25) a BS amendment that does not get money-out-of-politics. The “We The People” Amendment (HJR 54) is the only good 28th Amendment.
Should include Insurance Co. (Home and Auto insurance). They are taking advantage of us checking information about us that has no bearing on the policy. The constant raising of Premiums can be devastating.
Really, really good news out of Michigan. May it catch fire nationwide forthwith.
It looks like this prop might spread.
